Babar Azam trolled on Twitter After PAK vs NZ: Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam suffered brutal online trolling for his knock against New Zealand in the opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Hosting a major ICC event after 29 years, Pakistan succumbed to a huge defeat by 60 runs against the Kiwis on Wednesday at the National Stadium in Karachi.
After electing to bowl first, Pakistan had New Zealand in a precarious position at 73/3, but Tom Latham and Will Young stitched a stand of 118 runs off 126 balls. Both batsmen notched up their centuries, and then Latham and Phillips assaulted the Pakistani bowlers.
Phillips smashed 61 off 39 to power the total to 320, which proved to be too much for Pakistani batsmen on a pitch that slowed down and offered low bounce and turn.
Opener and star batsman Babar was Pakistan’s second-highest scorer in the innings with 64 runs, but he is facing a lot of criticism and scrutiny because of his low strike rate. Babar scored 64 runs off 90 balls, managing a poor strike rate of 71. Such a strike rate is dismal even in sub-270 games; it’s horrendous in a chase of 321. He hit only seven boundary-scoring shots out of 90 balls.
Pakistan just couldn’t get off the blocks in the first powerplay, in which they managed only 22 runs in 10 overs, with Babar scoring 12 runs off 27 balls.
Salman Agha scored 42 off 28, and Khushdil Shah scored 69 off 49. But such was Babar’s knock that it further added pressure on his batting partners, and even those who looked in good touch perished while playing one shot too many.
Babar was heading into this tournament on the back of huge scrutiny for his low scores in the tri-series, whose final Pakistan had also lost to New Zealand in Karachi. This knock has further mounted pressure on Babar.

Babar Azam is an evolved soul, he’s above all these material things like 2 points from a victory, he’s on a different journey …. He’s playing in a completely different game in his head. #ChampionsTrophy

Babar has a fine ODI record on paper. But those stats don't tell the story of far too many innings like today where he puts pressure on his teammates & leaves his team requiring a miracle. Pretty innings that don't threaten the opposition.

I couldn't watch Sunil Gavaskar's 36 (174) live but I watched Babar Azam bat in a 300+ chase.
