Babar Azam Close to Break the Record of Kohli: Led by the inspirational captain Babar Azam, Pakistan will kick-start their preparations for the T20 World Cup in June with a 4-T20I series against T20 world champions England.
Jos Buttler’s team will host the Men In Green for 4 T20Is, from May 22 to May 30. The matches will be played at Headingley, Edgbaston, Sophia Gardens, and Kennington Oval.
England and Pakistan had faced off in the T20 World Cup 2022 final at the MCG, where Buttler’s side emerged victorious courtesy of Sam Curran and Ben Stokes.
It has been a turbulent ride for Babar Azam since then. He failed to take Pakistan to the semi-finals of the World Cup 2023 and was removed as Pakistan’s captain in white-ball cricket. Shaheen Afridi was appointed as the new T20I skipper but was sacked after a whitewash in New Zealand, and Babar was reinstated as the T20I captain.
Babar resumed his captaincy stint with a 2-1 series win over Ireland, where he was the joint-highest run scorer in the series. He recorded scores of 57 and 75 in two of the three innings against Ireland. The bigger test now awaits Pakistan as England are at their full strength, with Jofra Archer also back from a long-term elbow injury.
Pakistan will need Babar Azam to step up with the bat for them against England. There are several batting records that the Pakistani captain will be eyeing in the upcoming series against England.
Babar Azam Close to Break the Record of Kohli
- Currently sitting with 3955 T20I runs, Babar needs 45 more runs to become only the second batsman in men’s T20I history, after Virat Kohli, to reach 4000 runs.
- Currently the third-highest men’s T20I run-scorer, Babar Azam could go past both Rohit Sharma (3974) and Virat Kohli (4037) on the runs chart in the shortest format and become the leading men’s T20I run-getter.
- Babar is the third-highest run-scorer against England in T20Is, with 592 runs in 15 innings at an average of 49 with one century and four fifties. Aaron Finch (619) and Kohli (639) are ahead of him in terms of runs against England in the shortest format. Babar needs only 48 more runs to become the top T20I run-scorer against England.
- Adding on to the previous record, if Babar scores 96 more runs in this series, he will become the leading run-scorer in T20Is in England among away batsmen. Finch leads this list with 370 runs.
- A huge record that Babar could break in this series is the most half-centuries in men’s T20I. He currently has 36 half-centuries, which is only one behind Kohli’s 37. Should Babar hit two fifties in this series, he will surpass Kohli’s tally.
