Australian batsmen with more than 10000 Test runs: On January 29, 2025, Steve Smith became the 4th Australian batsman and 15th overall in the world to cross the 10000-run landmark.
He achieved this feat during Australia’s first innings of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. Australia are currently on a tour of Sri Lanka that includes two Tests and two ODIs.
Smith is leading Australia in the Test series in the absence of Pat Cummins, who had opted out of this tour due to the birth of his child.
Smith had fallen only one run short of 10000 runs in his previous Test, which was against India. He missed the opportunity to get to 10000 Test runs in front of his family and friends at his home ground in Sydney. Smith needed 38 runs in Sydney to get to the mark of 1000 Test runs, but he managed scores of 33 and 4, ending the BGT 2024-25 with 9999 Test runs.
In Galle, he tapped a ball, the first ball he faced in the match, off left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, on the leg side to reach the milestone of 10000 Test runs.
Before Smith, only three Australian batsmen had attained this record. And Smith has a better average than the other three.
Australian batsmen with more than 10000 Test runs:
- Ricky Ponting – 13378 runs
- Allan Border – 11174 runs
- Steve Waugh – 10927 runs
- Steve Smith – 10000* runs
Also, Smith is the fifth-fastest (in terms of innings taken) to reach 10000 Test runs.

Meanwhile, currently, Smith has 34 Test centuries to his name, which puts him joint-seventh in the list of most Test centuries. Among Australians, only Ponting (41) has more Test hundreds than Smith.
