Australia Announces T20 World Cup Squad: Australia has announced its 15-man squad for the upcoming 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, and the side has some surprising omissions.
The tournament will kick off on June 2 in the West Indies and the United States, mere days after the end of IPL 2024.
Australia won this very tournament back in 2021 and will go into this edition as the ODI World Champions.
Australia Announces T20 World Cup Squad
All-rounder Mitchell Marsh, who has been Australia’s T20 captain for some time, will captain the team in this tournament. This team is filled with all-rounders, as the likes of Glenn Maxwell, Tim David, Cameron Green, and Marcus Stoinis are part of the squad.
As for specialist batters, David Warner will likely be playing his last World Cup. He will be joined by an in-form Travis Head as the second opener.
There are two massive omissions in the team’s batting selection. Long-time captain Steve Smith, who has been a part of the t20 side up until February this year, has not been named. A more surprising absence from the team is Jake Fraser-McGurk, who has been going through a purple patch in franchise cricket this year. He first dominated the ILT20 and is now showing off his aggressive batting in the IPL. Both of them will not be on the flight to the US.
This team will go into the tournament with two wicketkeepers, as both Matthew Wade and Josh Inglis have been regulars for the national team across all formats.
Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa will be the two specialist spinners in this squad. Zampa pulled out of the ongoing IPL due to personal reasons, while Agar has not played a T20I since the 2022 T20 World Cup. These two, coupled with Glenn Maxwell, will make a solid spin-trio for Australia.
Now coming to their pace attack, it sure is formidable. The golden trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazelwood will wreak havoc on any batting attack. They will be flanked by Nathan Ellis, who has been a part of Australia’s T20I structure for a couple of years now.
Here is Australia’s 15-man squad announced today. However, changes can be made to the squad until May 25:
Mitchell Marsh (C), David Warner, Travis Head, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, Tim David, Matthew Wade, Josh Inglis, Ashton Agar, Adam Zampa, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood, and Nathan Ellis
Australia is in Group B of the 2024 T20 World Cup. They will kick off their tournament against Oman on June 5. Then comes their biggest group stage match against arch-rivals and defending champions England on June 8.
A match against Namibia comes next on June 11. Australia will finish off their group-stage campaign against Scotland on June 15.
