Arteta Accused of Becoming a Mourinho Like: Footballer turned pundit Jaime Carragher slammed Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta for the team’s last moment draw against Liverpool. Arsenal, who were 2-1 ahead in the game till the 81st minute, had to return with a single point after Mohamed Salah found the net for the Reds.
Carragher questioned Arteta’s tactic in the second half and claimed that it probably would have cost them the match.
Arsenal had an incredible first half, with the Gunners taking the lead just 9 minutes into the game through Bukayo Saka. Liverpool were quick to respond and leveled the game 9 minutes later through center-back Virgil Van Dijk. But Arsenal took the lead back in the 42nd minute when Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino found the net.
But in the second half, it was all a brand new arsenal that chose to play a defensive game to secure the lead. This let Liverpool use all their attacking prowess, and that eventually ended up Reds leveling the game in the 81st minute by Egyptian magician Mo Salah.
Arteta Accused of Becoming a Mourinho Like Manager
Carragher criticized this tactic and slammed the Arsenal manager for becoming a ‘Jose Mourinho type of manager.’
“Mikel Arteta is slowly morphing into a Jose Mourinho type of manager, and nobody really thought that would happen. I just think it’s really interesting how he’s got there. You see today, 2-1 up, pressing Liverpool, on top of Liverpool, playing really well. Then they retreat in the second half,” said Carragher.
“Now, I know they had a couple of injuries at the back, but they’ve still got the midfielders playing, still got their attacking players playing, who you think ‘can you get on the ball, can you try and take the sting out of the pressure you’re under?’ That’s come from the manager, but it happens too often now.”
A win would have let Arsenal level Liverpool on the PL table in terms of points. With 5 wins from 9 matches, Arsenal sits at 3rd on the table, 4 points behind the second-placed Liverpool. The draw benefited Manchester City, who have a point lead over Liverpool to sit at the top of the table.
