Arsenal Tops Premier League Table Over Liverpool: Arsenal leapfrogged Liverpool to go to the top of the league table after the latter struggled in a 0-0 draw against a middling Manchester United side on Matchday 17 of the Premier League.
Before the latest Matchday in the Premier League, Liverpool was on top of the table with 37 points in 16 matches, while Arsenal was second on the table with 3 points in as many matches.
Jurgen Klopp’s side took on Manchester United on December 17. Before this match, United went through what was a disastrous week for the side. They first lost 3-0 to a 14th-place Bournemouth side and then lost to Bayern Munich 1-0 to finish a dismal fourth in their Champions League group, ending their European football campaign this season.
On the other hand, The Merseyside-based club had been undefeated since October and had not lost a single game at Anfield all season.
The match saw Liverpool take 34 shots with 8 being on target, as compared to United’s 8 shots and only 1 on target. In fact, the Red Devils were outclassed in every aspect of the game. Liverpool had almost 70% possession, made over double the passes of their opponents, and had an xG of 2.35 compared to Man United’s 0.63.
Despite that, the match ended in a dull 0-0 draw. This was also the first occasion this season when Liverpool failed to score a goal in a match.
At the same time, Arsenal were hosting Brighton at the Emirates Stadium. After an admittedly dull first half, the Gunners woke up in the second. The scoring was opened by Gabriel Jesus in the 53rd minute. Unable to clear a cross by Bukayo Saka, the Seagulls defender Jan Paul van Hecke only managed to head the ball towards his own far post, where Jesus was present to head the ball in, 1-0.
Arsenal doubled their lead in the 87th minute. A counter-attack by the home team saw Eddie Nketiah with the ball in the middle of the pitch. With options around him, he decided to put the ball in Kai Havertz’s path, who slotted the ball past the Brighton goalkeeper, 2-0. This was the final scoreline for the match.
