Arsenal Defeats Wolves To Open The Season: Arsenal got off to a solid start to the 2024/25 Premier League season as they defeated Wolves 2-0 in their opening game to start what many believe would be yet another title challenge.
The Gunners have had a pretty solid couple of seasons in the PL. From a club that had forgotten how to finish in the top four towards the end of the 2010s under Arsene Wenger, they had surged into title contenders. In the 2022/23 season, things finally started clicking under manager Mikel Arteta. However, despite being at the top of the table for almost the entire season, they were pipped from their spot by Manchester City on the final matchday.
Something very similar happened in the 2023/24 season, where they lost the lead towards the end of the season and finished second in consecutive years.
With a brilliant core of young talent and youthful experience, the London-based club comes into this season with a lot of hope and optimism. While they have not been too busy in the transfer market, Arteta has made a few big moves.
First, they made the move for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya permanent after he impressed last season on a spell of loan. In bigger news, the club signed Italian defensive sensation Riccardo Calafiori, who was a massive part of an impressive Bologna squad last season as the team finished a close fifth in Serie A. The 22-year-old was also highly impressed in what was otherwise a disappointing 2024 UEFA Euro campaign for Italy.
Arsenal Defeats Wolves To Open The Season
With all that in mind, Arsenal went into their opening game of the season against the Wolves at the Emirates Stadium. Looking good from the get-go, the North Londoners looked to dominate possession in the early proceedings, creating chances with their fluid movement.
While a few chances were created in the first quarter-hour, Arteta’s men scored their first goal in the 25th minute. Bukayo Saka made a run down the flank before flinging the ball into the box, which met Kai Havertz’s head and went into the net, 1-0.
The exciting gameplay continued. And while the Wolves forced a few changes out of Raya, it was the home team that dominated play in the first period as we went into halftime.
Arsenal looked a bit shaky at the start of the second half, which resulted in some scary possession by the Wanderers at the edge of the box, but that was to no avail. However, they did create some decent chances, including an attempt that was nicely saved by David Raya.
But as soon as Arsenal started dominating possession and attacking play again, they scored their second goal of the match. Havertz passes the ball to Saka, who cuts in before slotting the ball into the bottom-right corner in the 70th minute, 2-0.
And that was how the match ended. Both sides looked to attack but could not create decent chances towards the end of the contest as Arsenal walked away with all three points, a solid start to the season indeed.
