Angelo Mathews apologises to Sri Lankan fans: Senior Sri Lanka cricketer Angelo Mathews has expressed a state of shock as his side has been eliminated in the group stage of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
The 2014 T20 World Cup winners won’t be making it to the Super 8 round of the ongoing tournament in the West Indies and the USA as they have suffered a group round exit. Placed in Group D, Sri Lanka started their campaign with a thumping loss to South Africa, where they were bowled out for only 77 runs.

Then they suffered a 2-wicket loss against Bangladesh in a tight contest. Then their must-win game against Nepal was washed out, which eliminated them from the Super 8 race.
“We’ve let the entire nation down and we are really sorry”: Angelo Mathews apologises to Sri Lankan fans
They have a game against the Netherlands left to earn some salvation and some pride.
Speaking ahead of Sri Lanka’s match against the Netherlands in St Lucia,
“I think first of all we’ve let the entire nation down and we are really sorry because we’ve let ourselves down. We never expected this. I mean, we came across a lot of challenges but those are not something to sort of worry about, but it’s unfortunate that we didn’t make the second round.
Mathews said,
“We have just one more game in the tournament, and we’ll play for our pride. And we haven’t done justice to ourselves, especially the way we played in the first two games. So, it’s very unfortunate, we are heartbroken and we are hurting so much within ourselves.”
Heading into this tournament, Sri Lanka had defeated Afghanistan and Bangladesh in bilateral rubbers. The 37-year-old, for whom this is likely going to be his T20 World Cup, feels the players didn’t play to the best of their abilities.
“Unfortunately the way we played against those teams just before the World Cup and then once we came back here and the way we played… obviously the wickets were quite different but we didn’t do justice to ourselves,”
he added.
