Aman Sehrawat Wins Bronze In Olympics Wrestling: Wrestler Aman Sehrawat won the bronze medal match in the men’s 57 kg freestyle wrestling competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics, winning India’s sixth medal.
The 2024 Olympics have been disappointing for the Indian wrestling contingent for many reasons. First, Nisha Dahiya, who looked good in her first-round match, injured her hand while ahead in the quarterfinal round and ended up losing the contest in the women’s 68 kg freestyle. Then, medal hopeful Antim Panghal lost her first-round match in the women’s 53 kg freestyle.
Most heartbreakingly, Vinesh Phogat made her way into the final in the women’s 50 kg freestyle competition but missed weight by just 100 grams on the day of the gold medal match and was thus disqualified from the whole competition.

In the shadow of all the controversy surrounding Vinesh’s disqualification, Aman Sehrawat took the mat to bring at least one medal for India in wrestling. In the round of 16, the 21-year-old took on North Macedonia’s Vladimir Egorov and won that bout 10-0 via technical superiority, showing promise in his first-ever Olympic appearance.
The Indian, who entered the contest as the No. 5 seed, faced No. 4 seed Zelimkhan Abakarov of Albania in the quarterfinals. After taking the lead in the first round, Aman caught Abakarov in a Gator Roll and managed to win eight points by repeatedly getting into point positions, winning the match 12-0, again via technical superiority.
With all the form and confidence in the world, Sehrawat sailed into the semifinals, where he took on the No. 1 Japanese wrestler, Rei Higuchi. Mind you, all these matches took place on the same day.
But this is where Aman’s progression in the tournament ended, as the Japanese wrestler defeated him 10-0 via technical superiority. While this would end his hopes to compete for a silver or a gold medal, the Indian would still get to wrestle in the bronze medal match and have a chance to win one of two bronze medals in his weight class, the other having been won by the other man who lost in the semifinal, Gulonjon Abdullaev of Uzbekistan.
Last night, Aman Sehrawat took on Darian Cruz of Puerto Rico in the bronze medal match. Cruz immediately got a hold of Sehrawat’s left leg, pushing him out to the blue area to take the first point of the match.
But this lead was not to be for long, as under a minute later, the Indian took two points. The wrestler from Puerto Rico then got into position and took two points of his own, taking the lead once again.
Before the round ended, however, Aman took four more points, including two in the very last second before the buzzer, and went into halftime with a 6-3 lead.
The first points in the second round were taken by Cruz following a beautiful reversal, which saw him getting into position and getting two points. This was soon followed by Aman taking two more points. This latest exchange, which brought the score to 8-5 in favour of the Indian, might have hurt Darian Cruz, who immediately received some medical attention to his left ankle. But he did look fine after getting some medical spray.
With less than 90 seconds remaining in the bout, Sehrawat dominated from this point. Winning two points, then winning two more points. With less than 30 seconds to go, he forced his opponent out of the legal area for another point. At the end of the match, the score was 13-5 in favour of Aman Sehrawat, who won the bronze medal.
This was India’s sixth medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and fifth bronze. Manu Bhaker kicked the games off with a bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol shooting event. She then did a double and finished third in the mixed 10m air pistol shooting alongside Sarabjot Singh.
Swapnil Kusale then won India’s third bronze medal in the men’s 50m air rifle three-position event. It was the Indian men’s hockey team that won the fourth bronze medal. Neeraj Chopra brought India’s first, and so far only, silver medal at these games in the men’s javelin event.
