All players bought by MI in IPL Auction 2024: The Mumbai Indians owners, Akash Ambani and Nita Ambani, and head coach Mark Boucher looked very calm and assured of their plans at the IPL 2024 auction.
Last month, they released Arshad Khan, Ramandeep Singh, Hrithik Shokeen, Jofra Archer, Duan Jansen, Jhye Richardson, Riley Meredith, Chris Jordan, and Sandeep Warrier.
So clearly, they had gone into the auction needing to fill the gaps of overseas pacers and Indian spinners, and they met those requirements with the players they had targeted before the auction.
Their first buy was the tearaway young South African pace sensation Gerald Coetzee, who was South Africa’s best bowler in the World Cup, taking 20 wickets in 8 games. MI then bought Dilshan Madushanka, who was the surprise performer in the World Cup with 21 wickets. That MI managed to buy both of these pacers for less than INR 10 crore could be considered a steal.
MI roped in two experienced spinners for cheap prices: Mohammad Nabi for INR 1.5 crore and Shreyas Gopal for INR 20 lakh. Both of them will remain backups.
The exciting, unheard player the MI bought was Sri Lanka’s Nuwan Thushara, who has a slingy action like Malinga! Mahela Jayawardene and Lasith Malinga, both part of the MI camp, must have had a role in asking the owners to buy Thushara.
MI also picked up three uncapped Indians: Shivalik Sharma, Naman Dhir, and Anshul Kamboj.
Before the auction, in the trade window, MI had traded in Romario Shepherd and Hardik Pandya and traded Cameron Green away to RCB. Pandya has been appointed the new Mumbai Indians captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, who led them for the past 10 seasons, winning 5 IPL titles and 1 Champions League trophy.
