All Mumbai Indians Retentions For IPL 2025: Five-time champions Mumbai Indians have retained five players ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. The team has got back their Indian core.
Having retained five players, MI has one Right to Match (RTM) card left, which they might use on one of their uncapped players, seeing how they have not retained any.
With five players in their squad, the Indians have spent Rs. 75 crores on their star-studded core, leaving 45 crores for the auction. Here are all Mumbai Indians retentions for IPL 2025:
All Mumbai Indians Retentions For IPL 2025
1) Jasrit Bumrah – 18 Crore
Rather than getting their current or former captain as the first retention, the Mumbai Indians have valued star pacer Jasprit Bumrah. The 300-year-old is the second-highest wicket-taker in franchise history, scalping 165 in 133 games since making his IPL debut in 2013.
It is scarce for bowlers to be the top retention for an IPL team, but if there were to be one, it would be Bumrah. It would not be controversial to claim that the Indian pace maestro is currently the best bowler in the world. In 2024 alone, he took 20 wickets in 13 games in the IPL with an economy of 6.48 in a season where a 9+ economy was the norm. In the same year, he was also named the Player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup, winning India several matches, including the final.
While Jasprit Bumrah will likely not captain the side, naming him as the top retention and paying him the most money shows how much faith the franchise has placed in him.
2) Suryakumar Yadav – 16.35 Crore
Suryakumar Yadav has been an absolute beast for the Mumbai Indians in the past few seasons. It was while playing for MI that he went from a promising domestic player to the top T20 batter in the world.
Currently the captain of the Indian Cricket Team in the T20Is, SKY has scored 3033 runs in 98 games for his current IPL franchise, scoring at a strike rate of 148.09 and is the third-highest run scorer in team history.
Despite not being in contention for being the captain of the side, Suryakumar Yadav might just be the best T20 batter in the world at the moment and is a certified Mumbai Indians legend, which made it obvious for them to sign him.
3) Hardik Pandya – 16.35 Crore
Paid the same as No. 2 retention Suryakumar Yadav, Mumbai Indians Hardik Pandya comes in as the third retained player by the franchise.
At this moment in his career as one of the most high-profile limited-overs cricketers in the world, Pandya is a legend of two IPL franchises. Firstly, he is in the top seven run scorers and wicket takers in MI history, winning four IPL titles with them. In 2022, he was released and signed by the Gujarat Titans to make their captain. Then, he won one and finished as the runner-up in the other season with GT before returning to the Indians as their new skipper.
While his first year as the Mumbai Indians captain in 2024 went disastrous, Hardik has previously shown that he can be a successful T20 captain. And it seems that the franchise is baking their new skipper.
4) Rohit Sharma – 16.3 Crore
Rohit Sharma will go down in history as one of the greatest IPL players of all time. With a record six titles in his cabinet, he has captained MI from a promising team to the five-time championship-winning giants they are.
While he is the highest run scorer in MI history, with 5731 runs in 221 games for the franchise, his and the team’s 2024 season was dominated by the stories and controversy around Hardik Pandya replacing him as the team captain. Despite that, he retained a senior place in the team and was the proverbial veteran in the field.
Having retained him as the fourth pick and below Pandya, the Mumbai Indians have told Rohit Sharma that they are still looking at Hardik as their captain. But paying him just Rs. 5 lakh less than him also shows that they still value their five-time league-winning skipper.
5) Tilak Varma – 8 Crore
As their fifth and final pick, the Mumbai Indians have retained Tilak Varma, who has been exceptional for the franchise in the past couple of seasons.
The former India U-19 player is currently the captain of the India A side. He has also played several limited-overs games for India. But he has played his best cricket for MI, where he has scored 1156 runs in 38 games at a near 40 average and a strike rate of 146.33. In the 2024 season, he crossed the 400-run mark in a season for the first time.
Tilak Varma is the future of the Mumbai Indians and the only player they have retained under the age of 30. A possible future captain of the franchise, Tilak is one of the most promising young players in India today.
Big Players Not Retained
The biggest player this side has not retained is wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan. Having scored over 2300 runs for the franchise, he was once touted as one of the best future prospects in Indian cricket before his stocks fell sharply in the past year. Another solid player they did not retain is Tim David. However, the Australian all-rounder is now out of the squad from his national team as well.
MI also had a lot of promising uncapped stars, any of which they could have retained. Some of those are middle-order finisher Nehal Wadhera, pace-bowling all-rounder Anshul Kamboj, pacer Kumar Kartikeya, and fast bowler Akash Madhwal.
