Ajit Agarkar On Why KL Rahul Is Not In WC Squad: Chairman of BCCI’s Selection Committee, Ajit Agarkar, recently opened up about the exclusion of KL Rahul from the 15-man squad going for the t20 World Cup.
The 2024 ICC T20 World Cup will kick off on June 2, a few days after the IPL in the West Indies and the United States.
There will always be questions and objections raised about any squad picked for such a major tournament. And the biggest question raised about this squad is why KL Rahul has not been picked.
KL Rahul was not only a part of the India squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup; he was the vice-captain of that side as well as the backup wicketkeeper.
But in the 2024 squad, he finds no place. Instead, Rishabh Pant will be joined by Sanju Samson, who will be playing his first World Cup, as the two wicketkeepers for India.
Ajit Agarkar On Why KL Rahul Is Not In WC Squad
Ajit Agarkar and team captain Rohit Sharma recently held a press conference to answer questions about the squad selection for the World Cup. When asked about the omission of KL Rahul from the 15-man unit, Agarkar had this to say:
“KL Rahul has been opening in the IPL. We were mainly looking for middle-order options. So, we felt that Samson and Pant are better suited for that. Samson can bat anywhere in the lineup. So, it was just about what we needed and not about who was better.”
This is true, as Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Virat Kohli are all part of the squad and will occupy the top order. Plus, Shubman Gill has been picked as a reserve player in case any of them get injured.
Meanwhile, either Rishabh Pant or Sanju Samson can play the role of middle-overs basher, even if Sanju has been flourishing at No. 3 for the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024.
With that being said, here is India’s 15-man squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup:
Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammed Siraj.
Reserve players: Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Avesh Khan, and Khalil Ahmed.
India will start their tournament against Ireland on June 5. They will then play Pakistan on June 9 before finishing up the group stage with matches against the US on June 12 and Canada on June 15.
