Aiden Markram Discusses South Africa Final Loss: South African national cricket team captain Aiden Markram broke his silence following his team’s heartbreaking loss against India in the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Markram became the first South African to captain his national side to the final of a cricket World Cup. The team was undefeated on their way to the final. After defeating Sri Lanka, the Netherlands, Bangladesh, and Nepal in the group stage, they beat the US, England, and the West Indies in the Super 8. They then demolished Afghanistan in the semis to make their way into the final.
In what was one of the most thrilling finals of a World Cup ever, India batted first and lost some early wickets. Virat Kohli, after being out of form for the entire tournament, finally scored some big runs as his 76-off-59, helped along by solid innings by Axar Patel and Shivam Dube, took the Men in Blue to a fighting total of 176.
Even though South Africa lost some early wickets while chasing, first Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs and then Aiden Markram took their team to needing just 30 runs in as man balls. With a 96% chance of winning from this position, the game took yet another turn.

Some legendary bowling by Jasprit Bumrah, a superb over by Arshdeep Singh, and some clutch death bowling led India to a 7-run victory, snatching the cup from the jaws of the African Lions.
This win means a lot to Indian players and fans. Despite being the best team in the world, India has failed to win any major ICC trophies in the past 11 years. But this win meant this team, which deserved to win a trophy in the last few years, finally did.
This victory meant even more now that we know that legends like Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and captain Rohit Sharma have retired from T20 internationals.
But with tremendous joy for some comes heartbreak for others. From a position where they could taste victory, the World Cup was snatched from the hands of South Africa. After eight semi-final appearances in World Cups, this was the Proteas’ first final. It would also have been their first World Cup win if not for some excellent bowling in the death and an iconic catch by Suryakumar Yadav in the final over.
Aiden Markram Discusses South Africa Final Loss
While he scored only four runs in the final, Markram will go down in history as one of the greatest South African captains after taking the team to the final.
In the press conference following the match, Aiden Markram opened up about his feelings following the loss.
“Gutted,” Aiden Markram described his emotions in a single word before continuing:
“Hurts quite a bit, but incredibly proud. We never got comfortable; things happen quickly at the back end, but got into a great position to prove we were worthy finalists.”
While South African players and fans recovered from the disbelief of what some would call another ‘choking’ by the national team, Virat Kohli was named the Player of the Match for the final, and Jasprit Bumrah was named Player of the Tournament for his 15 wickets and a sun-5 economy.
