As India announced its squad for the upcoming ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka, new head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar faced the media. Many concerns regarding the selection were answered and one was the exclusion of Sanju Samson from the ODI Squad
Agarkar Replies On Sanju Samson Snub Over Pant
When asked about picking Rishabh Pant over Sanju Samson, Agarkar gave reasons that were not satisfactory. Here is what he said on the topic:
“Before his unfortunate [car] accident, [Rishabh] has been a key player for us,” Agarkar explained. “KL has been terrific in one-day cricket and had a great World Cup. Unfortunately, someone had to miss out, and in this instance, it was Sanju.
“These guys will have to keep getting runs and performing otherwise you know there is a quality player waiting. With a big Test season coming up, we feel these two will have a huge role to play. To get Rishabh playing 50 overs will be a step forward, hopefully, he’ll build on what he’s done so far.”
Rishabh Pant’s batting average in One Day Internationals (34,6) is far lower than Sanju Samson’s. In fact, Sanju Samson’s average (56.7) is better than MS Dhoni’s (50.6). Still, Samson getting snubbed over and over again by the national team has drawn wide criticism from fans and former players.
