Afghanistan Vs Uganda T20 World Cup Match Report: Afghanistan defeated Uganda by 125 runs to register their first win in the 2024 T20 World Cup in what was one of the most one-sided games in the history of the competition.
The Group C encounter was played in Guyana’s Providence Stadium. Uganda, playing their first-ever cricket World Cup game, won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Afghanistan got off to a flying start in the powerplay overs, scoring 66 runs without losing a wicket. Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran gave them an immaculate start.
In fact, the two had an opening partnership of 154 runs. This was just 16 runs short of the highest opening partnership in T20 World Cup history. The record stays with Alex Hales and Jos Buttler, who scored 170 runs in the semifinal of the 2022 tournament against India.
But after Zadran and Gurbaz departed just four deliveries apart, Afghanistan’s inning went off the rails. In the final five overs, the Afghans scored 27 runs and lost four wickets. The team that was well on their way to a 200-run score fell short and landed on 183/5 at the end of 20 overs.

However, all the momentum Uganda built in the death overs of the first inning was washed away as soon as they came out to bat. Afghanistan’s star pacer, Fazalhaq Farooqi, took two wickets in the very first over. He then took another in the third over to end up with three wickets in his first spell.
Uganda was reeling at 18/5 in the fifth over, at which point Riazat Ali Shah and Robinson Obuya looked to play the overs out and played the innings of 11-off-34 and 14-off-25, respectively.
The two took the inning to the 13th over before Shah lost his wicket. The whole Uganda batting order was dismissed in 16 overs for 58 runs, thus a 125-run loss in their World Cup debut.
While Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran played solid innings for Afghanistan in this match, it was Fazalhaq Farooqi who picked up the Player of the Match award for his incredible spell of 5/9 in four overs.
With this win, Afghanistan jumped to the top of Group C with one win, two points, and a solid net run rate of +6.350. The West Indies is second in this group with one win and an NRR of +0.411. Papua New Guinea and Uganda are third and fourth, respectively, while New Zealand is fifth in the group, not having played a single match so far.
