As for Australia, they kicked their tournament off with a brilliant win over England, chasing down a 352-run target, the largest in tournament history. Then, their second game against South Africa was abandoned due to rain.
Now, the Australia vs Afghanistan match will decide which two teams will make it to the semi-final from Group B. Ahead of this match, the minds of a lot of people will go back to the last time these two teams competed in a 50-over ICC tournament, which was the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
In that match in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. In that game, while chasing 292, Australia was 112/7 in the 22nd over when Glenn Maxwell was dropped at 33 by Mujee Ur Rahman. In one of the biggest turning points in a match in cricket history, Maxwell then went on to score 201 runs and single-handedly won his team the match. With that momentum, the Aussies made it to the semis and ended up winning the World Cup.

A moment like that will remain in the minds of fans and players for the rest of their lives. But if you ask Afghanistan Cricket Team captain Hashmatullah Shahidi, that moment has no bearing on his team’s mindset going into their upcoming match. This is what he had to say to the reporters in a press conference.
“You think we will come only to play with Maxwell? We have planning for the entire Australian team. I know that he played really well in the 2023 World Cup, but that’s part of history.
The two teams have not competed in an ODI since. However, in the 2024 T20 World Cup, the Afghans beat the Aussies in a Super Eight match and ended up making it to the semi-finals. The two sides also have some friction, as the Kangaroos cancelled a bilateral series last year against the Asian side, citing the state of human rights under the Taliban government.
Afghanistan will take on Australia in their last group game in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, with the winner of this match making it to the semi-finals.
