Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first. India had a poor start once again as they lost their skipper in the third over of the innings, Rohit mistiming his slog against Fazalhaq Farooqi. Rishabh Pant, though, wasn’t going to waste deliveries and played fire with fire in his cameo of 20 (11). He got out lbw while trying to reverse-sweep Rashid Khan.
Virat Kohli, at the other end, struggled for boundaries and managed another disappointing innings, though he did get into double figures this time, scoring 24 runs in 24 balls, and got out to Rashid while trying to hit a six over long on.
Suryakumar Yadav, who had notched a 49-ball fifty against the USA, was back in his attacking elements, even though this pitch wasn’t the easiest to bat on. Suryakumar unleashed an array of sweeps, especially against Rashid Khan, whom he swept for a four and a six.
The loss of Shivam Dube at the other end didn’t deter SKY from going after the bowlers as he took down Azmatullah Omarzai for a couple of fours and a six.
Hardik Pandya got going with a six and a four to Noor Ahmad. Suryakumar reached his half-century in 27 balls by blasting Farooqi for a six and a four but got out immediately after while attempting another maximum. Naveen-ul-Haq got rid of Hardik for 32(24). Naveen, however, leaked 14 runs in the last over as Axar’s cameo helped India go over 180.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz started the chase in style by lofting Arshdeep for a four and a six in the first over but was undone by a clever slower ball from Jasprit Bumrah in the second over. Axar Patel and Bumrah struck more in the powerplay: Ibrahim Zadran hit Axar straight to Rohit at cover, while Hazratullah Zazai was also outsmarted by Bumrah’s change of pace.
Afghanistan ended powerplay at 35/3 with the game looking out of their reach already. Gulbadin Naib and Azmatullah Omarzai for a partnership of 44 (38), but that wasn’t taking them anywhere in the tall run chase. Their stand was broken by Kuldeep, who was playing his first game of the tournament, with Gulbadin’s wicket.
Jadeja got on the wickets column too before Bumrah returned to scalp his third. Kuldeep and Arshdeep closed things out for a 47-run victory.
