Aakash Chopra Questions Tacical Errors By GT Vs DC: Former Indian commentator Aakash Chopra brought into question the many tactical errors made by the Gujarat Titans during their most recent loss against the Delhi Capitals.
GT took on DC in Match 40 of IPL 2024 at Delhi Arun Jaitley Stadium. The away team won the toss and decided to bowl first. That looked like the correct decision at the end of the 18th over. But then, captain Rishabh Pant and Tristan Stubbs scored over 53 runs in the last two overs to take their score to 224.
In response, the Titans took their inning on a roller coaster ride. First, captain Shubman Gill was dismissed cheaply, then Sai Sudharsan and Wriddhiman Saha built a solid partnership, then wickets fell in quick succession, but then David Miller came to the rescue, but then he was dismissed, and GT lost the match by four runs despite Rashid Khan’s late-game heroics.
But it shouldn’t have been such a massive score in the first place. GT’s best bowler on the day was Sandeep Warrier, who bowled three overs for 3/15 and did not bowl after the powerplay. In the 19th over, there had been a calculation error that forced captain Gill to bring in Sai Kishore, a left-arm finger spinner, to bowl his first in the 19th over, which promptly went for 22 runs.
Mind you, Sandeep Warrier had one over left. Even Noor Ahman, who admittedly had given away 36 runs in three overs, had one of his overs left. But it was Sai Kishore who bowled the all-important 19th over.
Aakash Chopra Questions Tacical Errors By GT Vs DC
Aakash Chopra, who can be heard commentating on IPL matches for JioCinema, reviewed the DC vs. GT match in a video on his YouTube channel. In the review, he highlighted this very error made by the Titans.
“There was a tactical blooper. It was a faux pas. It wasn’t understandable how you could do that. You brought Sai Kishore in the 19th over. The first over by a left-arm spinner was the 19th over of the inning. Tristan Stubbs and Rishabh Pant were in front of him. We thought Rishabh would hit but Tristan destroyed and went,” he said.
The former Indian opener went on to wonder how a cricketing genius like Ashish Nehra could let such a thing happen to his team, saying –
“It was a very expensive over and you were thinking how it happened. Sandeep Warrier had picked up three wickets and his fourth over was left. The calculation could have been better. Ashish Nehra doesn’t miss a beat. He understands the game very well. How did that mistake happen?”
This, coupled with Mohit Sharma bowling the most expensive spell in IPL history of 0/73 in four overs, meant Delhi took their score just out of GT’s reach.
With this loss, the Gujarat Titans have fallen to seventh on the table with eight points in nine matches. They will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their next match on April 28 in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.
