Former cricketer-now-analyst Aakash Chopra has commented on the likelihood of Suryakumar Yadav playing for India in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
SKY has recently been named the permanent captain of the Indian T20I team after former captain Rohit Sharma, along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, retired from the format.
His placement as captain surprisingly came over Hardik Pandya, who was the vice-captain of the team that won the 2024 T20 World Cup. In fact, Pandya has not even been named the vice-captain of the team going forward; that responsibility is going to Shubman Gill.

Suryakumar’s first test as the T20I captain will come in the three-match series against Sri Lanka, which will be his first series as the full-time captain.
Now that the star batter’s importance in the T20I side has grown, one would’ve thought that he would also remain an integral part of the ODI squad. The 33-year-old was a part of the Indian National Cricket Team that made their way to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
But that seems to not be the case. The new Indian head coach, Gautam Gambhir, and the head of the selection committee, Ajit Agarkar, scheduled a press conference before the team left for the Sri Lanka tour. Gambhir’s first big media appearance since being hired as the national team coach, several things about the team going forward were discussed in the event.
Aakash Chopra On Suryakumar Yadav ODI Snub
One of the points that was made clear was how Surya will not be a part of India’s plans in the ODIs going forward, something that came as somewhat of a shock to everyone.
Aakash Chopra covered the entire press conference in a video on his YouTube channel. Before making any comments or reaching any conclusions about Yadav not being included in the ODI squad going forward, Chopra first summarised what had been said about this situation in the press conference.
“Suryakumar Yadav was a part of the team that reached the final of the last (2023 ODI) World Cup. He was part of this (2024 T20) World Cup as well, the (David Miller in the final) catch he took, but he is now not part of the ODI team,” he said.
The former Indian Test opener then went on to conclude that Suryakumar’s omission from ODIs in the future means that he will not be a part of the India squad for the 2024 Champions Trophy, he concluded,
“A question was asked about that and he said that Suryakumar Yadav is a phenomenal and special player but he will be seen playing in T20Is only and is currently not being considered in ODIs. So if he is not being considered and the Champions Trophy is about to come, you can assume that he won’t be seen there.”
Despite his status in the ODIs, SKY will captain India in T20Is in India vs Sri Lanka series, the first match of which will be played on July 27 at 7:00 PM in the Pellekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy, Sri Lanka.
