Aakash Chopra On Ruturaj Playing In T20 WC: Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra reckons that Ruturaj Gaikwad might not be a frontrunner for India’s squad going to the 2023 T20 World Cup, but he will surely be a part of it.
The 2024 T20 World Cup will commence on June 2, mere days after the IPL final. Naturally, the IPL is a perfect proving ground for all the players looking to make it into the Indian squad for the tournament. The competition is filled to the brim with players and spots in positions like batsman and wicketkeepers are very limited.
One of the players looking to make it into the national side is Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwadd. In 2024, CSK looked to find a future captain for the franchise as it might as well be MS Dhoni’s last IPL season. The side took a chance on Gaikwad and it is going well so far as CSK is currently third on the table with four wins in six matches.

As for Ruturaj on a personal level, the season is going fine as well. He is currently 14th on the Orange Cap list with 224 runs in six innings with an average of 44.80. He has acted as the anchor of his side in the top order and has scored two 50s.
Before IPL 2024, the 27-year-old was not a frontline opener for India in any format and rather played as a rotation player. The likes of Captain Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal always seem to be ahead of him in the pecking order.
With him performing decently in the tournament, one may believe that Ruturaj has put a strong case for a selection into the India team for the upcoming World Cup.
Aakash Chopra On Ruturaj Playing In T20 WC
Aakash Chopra, who has been commentating on the IPL for JioCinema, recently released a video on his YouTube channel previewing CSK’s upcoming match against Lucknow Super Giants. In the video, he opened up about his thoughts on Ruturaj Gaikwad’s World Cup chances.
“He is a gun player and is batting well. He is not a frontrunner but is part of the T20 World Cup list, and he should be kept as well – he scored a century against Australia. Everyone is spoken about, so why not him?” said Chopra.
With Yashasvi Jaiswal not on his A-game for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024, Ruturaj Gaikwad might just pip him into the World Cup squad.
Gaikwad and CSK will face LSG in their next match on April 19 in Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium.
