Aakash Chopra On Rohit Sharma Dismissal In Ranji: Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that Indian Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma is getting out in a similar way while playing the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai as he did while struggling for India in the Test series against New Zealand.
Rohit, along with several national team regulars, is currently plying their trade in the Ranji Trophy, India’s premier first-class cricket competition. This is per a mandate by the BCCI that states that Indian Team players currently not representing the country in international cricket need to play domestic cricket.
This mandate came partially as a response to India’s poor form in recent months. First, the team lost their first Test series at home in 12 years when they were whitewashed 3-0 against New Zealand and then lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia 3-1.

Arguably the biggest reason for India’s recent losses in Test cricket, which have resulted in the team getting out of contention for the World Test Championship final in 2025, has been the team’s poor batting across the board.
While a few centuries have come from the Indian players’ bats, there have been consistently poor performances, especially from the biggest names in the team, chief of them being the captain, Rohit Sharma.
Rohit has been in awful form while playing for India in the whites. In the three matches at home against the Kiwis, he scored 91, which included one half-century. Then in the three games he played against the Aussies, he scored 31 runs in five innings.
But this has not been the end of the misery for the ‘Hit’man, as he is now playing for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. Playing his first game in this tournament in almost 10 years, Rohit was in the side for the game against Jammu & Kashmir.
In the first inning, he got out for just three runs. While trying to glance at a high ball by pacer Umar Nazir Mir, he found the thick edge and was caught at cover. Then, in the second inning, the Indian Cricket Team captain showed some spark and scored 28 off 35, but while looking to hit pacer Yudhvir Singh’s ball over covers, found the inside edge and was caught at mid-wicket.

Aakash Chopra, who analysed Mumbai’s five-wicket loss to J&K in a video on his YouTube channel, said that the Indian skipper is now under a microscope. He also believed that Rohit Sharma’s dismissals in the Ranji Trophy were similar to how he was getting out to Matt Henry in the Test series against New Zealand last year.
“A time comes occasionally when you don’t score runs. You come even more in the headlines when runs aren’t scored, even in first-class cricket. Then you are seen with a magnifying glass and kept under the microscope. His time hasn’t been good. One thing is there for sure: the way he was getting out to Matt Henry, he got out similarly against J&K in the first innings. He got out like that in Australia as well. To get out to pace so many times, it doesn’t augur well for somebody like Rohit Sharma,” said Chopra.
Rohit Sharma will next play in Mumbai’s final Ranji group game of the season against Meghalaya before leaving to captain the Indian Cricket Team in the three-ODI series against England. That would be followed by his leading the team into the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 to be played in February and March.
