Aakash Chopra On Rinku Singh Unfair Treatment: Former Indian cricketer turned broadcaster Aakash Chopra has praised Indian middle-order batsman Rinku Singh for his dominant half-century against Bangladesh, saying that the 26-year-old should have been in the squad for the 224 T20 World Cup.
The second of three India vs Bangladesh T20Is was played on October 9th in Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. It was the visitors who won the toss and decided to bat first. In the initial few overs, this looked like the correct decision as the Indian Cricket Team lost both their openers, those being Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, within three overs.
When captain Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed in the final over of the powerplay, in walked Rinku Singh. He, along with all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, built a 108-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
While it was Reddy who took much of the spotlight for scoring 74 off 34 in only his second international game, Rinku’s 53 runs in 29 balls played a massive role in India scoring 221 runs in 20 overs. This inning showed two things: how quickly he can score runs and how reliable he is in the middle order.
Aakash Chopra On Rinku Singh Unfair Treatment
Someone who sang praises for Rinku following the game was Aakash Chopra. Reviewing the second T20I in a video on his YouTube channel, the former Indian opener opined how Rinku, in many aspects, has been treated unfairly so far and how he should have been a part of the Indian Cricket Team that won the 2024 T20 World Cup, saying,
“Rinku Singh’s story is very interesting. No matter how much you talk about him, it’s less. I feel full justice is not being done with him. He should have logically been in the T20 World Cup squad because if you had seen his performances in the last year prior to the World Cup, he was outstanding.”
Chopra then went on to highlight how the Kolkata Knight Riders star has done well for and saved an Indian inning on several occasions in his short international career.
“He has done well wherever and whenever he has played. He gets to bat whenever the Indian team is struggling, whether it’s against Afghanistan, South Africa, or Bangladesh. He has scored a half-century every time, and then if you see his strike rate in those innings, you will say outstanding,” said the commentator.
Finally, Chopra summarised his feelings about Rinku Singh by saying he is an all-in-one package for India in the limited-overs formats, saying,
“It means he is scoring runs, stabilising the innings, doesn’t let wickets fall, stops the collapse, and then the strike rate is so good that you reach an above-par score despite early losses. You have phenomenal ability.”
After winning the first match of the series in convincing fashion, India defeated Bangladesh in the second T20I by 86 runs, restricting the Bangla Tigers to 135/9 in 20 overs. This win meant that the Men in Blue won the three-match series. They will now look to whitewash the series by winning the third and final T20I, which will be played in the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Saturday, October 12.
