Bret Hart Makes His WWE Return In His Home Town: Wrestling legend and multi-time world champion Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart made his return to WWE TV on this week’s episode of Monday Night RAW, where he went face-to-face with World Heavyweight Champion Gunther.
Bret Hart Makes His WWE Return In His Home Town
RAW took place in Bret’s hometown of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, in the Saddledome, home of the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL). This being a season premiere for the long-running weekly show, WWE decided to bring in arguably Canada’s greatest-ever wrestler, The Hitman, to the show.
At the one-hour mark of the show, commentators Wade Barrett and Joe Ressitore welcomed Bret to the ring. A few hours before the show, reports emerged that Hart was unwell and might even skip the show. But that was not the case, and thankfully so, as many Calgary natives must have bought the ticket to watch their national icon.
The Excellence of Execution has always prided itself on being arguably the best wrestler of all time. If you ask him, it is not arguable that he is ‘the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be.’
On his recent RAW appearance, Bret expressed his immense pride in being a Canadian champion. As he went on about how Canada produced some of the best wrestlers, the crowd rose to a fever pitch. Hart, being a five-time WWE Champion, certainly knows a thing or two about being a champion.
But soon after Bret Hart got the mic, he was intercepted by the current World Heavyweight Champion, Gunther. The Ring General came out in a disrespectful mood. While he did praise Bret for being among the best, the Austrian also claimed that while Hart is ‘the best there was’, he himself is ‘the best there is and the best there ever will be’.
The 2024 King of the Ring winner then antagonized the two-time Hall of Famer even more, claiming that his favorite wrestler of all time was Bill Goldberg. Bret wrestled Goldberg at WCW’s Starcade in 1999. During the match, the former Universal Champion hit a thrust kick at Hart to get the full brunt of it. That kick gave him a concussion that eventually resulted in his retirement. Bret, to this day, blames Goldberg for not only “ending his career” but also being an unsafe wrestler.
This was enough to bring Sami Zayn out to the ring. Sami, who ended Gunther’s legendary Intercontinental Championship reign at WrestleMania 40, has now challenged the World Heavyweight Champ for a match. And while the leader of ‘Imperium’ rold Zayn n for a second week in a row. Bret Hart was there to rile him up, which he did, and things got intense.
The segment ended with Bret and Sami Zayn hugging. Two Canadian legends, for sure. Not only that, Hart was the one who introduced Zayn to the main roster all the way back in 2015. So this was a nice complete-circle moment.
As for Sami Zayn, he will most likely face Gunther for the world title at the upcoming Bad Blood premium live event, which will take place at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 5.
