8 Retentions For IPL 2025 Mega Auction?: While the IPL 2024 season is only into its third week, the BCCI has got the ball rolling about the IPL 2025 mega auction. The board has invited all 10 franchise owners to a meeting in Ahmedabad next week, on April 16th, to discuss the number of retentions and Right To Match cards for the auction later this year.
It has been learned that a number of franchises have suggested the BCCI allow eight retentions, including Right To Match cards, for the mega-auction, as that would allow the franchise to carry on with the players they have invested in, scouted, and formed an association with the fans.
The last mega-auction was ahead of the IPL 2022 season. Now, the next mega-auction, slated for the end of this year, will be a mega-auction.
For the IPL 2022 mega-auction, the BCCI allowed four retentions with a maximum of 3 Indian players, 2 foreign players, and 2 uncapped Indians.
8 Retentions For IPL 2025 Mega Auction? BCCI Source Reveals
It has been reported that multiple franchises have informally requested the board increase the number of retentions to 8 for the IPL 2025 mega-auction.
“The league is in its early stages, and the board is seeking recommendations to move it forward. Player retention is a major factor, as most franchises favor having a provision to retain about eight players before the auction, based on informal discussions,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by CricToday.
The important factor in retaining more than four players is that teams will have their core intact.
“Some people believe that the frequent separation of the core team is absurd. Franchises have determined that there needs to be space to keep the majority of the core group,” said the BCCI source.
This, however, may not sit well with franchises like RCB and Delhi Capitals, who are struggling this season and will look for an overhaul in the mega-auction.
“A few franchises will want a wider range of players in the auction to reestablish their teams, so there will be a few obstacles. Note that there are currently ten teams, and the ‘cream pool’ will shrink significantly if the number of retentions is brought up,” the source added.
Apart from the IPL 2025 mega auction retention discussion, the franchises have also reportedly asked the board to increase the purse from INR 90 crore to INR 100 crore for the mega auction.
