IND vs BAN Test Squad: On Sunday, the BCCI announced a 16-man India squad to take on Bangladesh in the first Test in Chennai, starting September 19. The second Test will be played in Kanpur, the squad for which will be announced after the first game. This series is part of the ongoing World Test Championship 2023-25.
The big talking point is Rishabh Pant, who is back to the Test setup for the first time since his car accident in December 2022 and is all but certain to slot back in the XI, replacing Dhruv Jurel.
Mohammed Shami is not picked as he continues to recover from an ankle surgery. Apart from Shami, the BCCI had all players available and fit for selection.
India squad for the 1st Test of the Bangladesh Test series:
Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), R Ashwin, R Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, Yash Dayal.
India have won all their home Test series since 2013. Their last home Test series win came earlier this year against England, when Rohit Sharma’s team beat Ben Stokes’ side 4-1. India missed a few stars in that series due to injuries and unavailability. Now that those guys are back, the selectors dropped a few players from the England series.
5 Indian Players Who Were Part of the England Test Series But Are Not Picked in the IND vs BAN Test Squad:
Shreyas Iyer
Iyer scored 104 runs in two Tests against England, with a highest score of 35. He was dropped midway through that series. His short-ball struggles mean that the management doesn’t see him as a prospect for the Australia tour.
Devdutt Padikkal
Padikkal made his Test debut in Dharamsala against England and hit a fifty in his only innings. However, with Kohli and Rahul back in the squad, the left-hander has been dropped.
KS Bharat
Bharat scored 92 runs in two Tests against England and was replaced by Jurel, who impressed everyone with his temperament and technique. With Pant back and Jurel a backup, there was no need of Bharat in the squad for the Bangladesh Tests.
Rajat Patidar
Patidar had a disappointing debut series against England, as he scored only 63 runs in three Tests and failed to grab his chances. He has expectedly been dropped from the Test setup.
Mukesh Kumar
Mukesh Kumar played one Test against England, bowled 12 overs, and picked one wicket. His omission is a bit surprising, considering he has played only three Tests so far, in three different continents, and picked up 7 wickets at an average of 25.57.
India have retained Akash Deep and handed a maiden Test call-up to Yash Dayal. Both of them will remain backup to Bumrah and Siraj. Mukesh, though, could find himself back in the fray for the Australia tour, which includes five Test matches.
