Punjabi batter Anmolpreet Singh might not be on many people’s minds as a replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad for IPL 2025, but he is an explosive Indian batter who scored the fastest century by an Indian player when he scored a 35-ball ton in the Vijay Hazare Trophy late last year.
While he did go unsold in the IPL 2025 mega-auction, he had a decent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) earlier this year, where, in six games, he scored 178 runs at an average of over 35 and a strike rate of over 160.
4) Mayank Agarwal
From once being one of the most promising openers in India to now being out of the national team and even the IPL, Mayank Agarwal has not played any substantial limited-overs cricket in recent times. And even if he has, he has not done well, as seen by his underwhelming performances in the Vijay Hazare last year.
If Agarwal is brought into the CSK squad after going unsold in the auction, it will be because of his sheer experience, something the Super Kings seem to like in their players.
3) Yash Dhull
The former India U-19 captain has never had a good time. He only played four games in the league in 2023 and did not do well. Since then, he has not played any IPL cricket. While he has shown a lot of promise in first-class cricket, it seems that T20 might not be his format.
In the 2024/25 SMAT, Dhull scored 238 runs at an average of 34 in nine games, but he scored those runs at an average of 117. Despite that, the youngster is a fine run scorer who might be refined into a solid IPL batter under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.

2) Prithvi Shaw
Once considered the next great Indian batter who even toured Australia with the Indian Test side, Prithvi Shaw has fallen from grace in more ways than one. So much so that he even went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction.
While Shaw has a lot of IPL experience, even having a couple of good seasons under him, he has been okay at best in the recent domestic cricket he has played. In the SMAT, Prithvi scored 197 runs in nine games at a strike rate of 156 but a poor average of 21.88. Still, a fine replacement option.
1) Ayush Mhatre
The 17-year-old U-19 opening batter Ayush Mhatre was recently called in for a trial by the Chennai Super Kings. It was then reported that he will likely be the one who will be signed if a CSK player gets injured. Now that Gaikwad is out with an injury, it is most likely that the young batter will be brought in as the replacement.
An uber-explosive batter with a range of shots, Mhatre has displayed a lot of his abilities in U-19 cricket, especially in the 2024 U-19 Asia Cup. But more impressively, for Mumbai in the VHT, he broke the record of the youngest Indian player to score a 150 in List A cricket, scoring 181 in 117 balls against Nagaland.
