Best bowlers in the world in Tests in 2024: It has been an exciting year of Test cricket in 2024 so far. There have been some dominating series wins and some upsets. The year started with the West Indies shocking Australia at the Gabba and India winning in Cape Town.
India then thumped England at home by 4-1, but the Three Lions recorded two consecutive home series wins. Bangladesh registered a historic maiden Test series win in Pakistan, while Sri Lanka whitewashed New Zealand at home.
India defeated Bangladesh also at home, but their biggest test in Test cricket this year will be the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia. And South Africa registered a series win in the West Indies and Australia in New Zealand.
Once again, bowlers have been at the forefront of these Test series. On that note, we will look at the five best bowlers in the world in Test cricket in 2024 so far.
Five best bowlers in the world in Tests in 2024:
5. Josh Hazlewood
Australian fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has once again gone under the radar but has been highly effective. In five Tests this year until now, Hazlewood has picked up 29 wickets at an outstanding average of 13.68, which is the best average among the top 10 wickettakers this year.
The lanky speedster has taken two five-wicket hauls, one against the West Indies and one against New Zealand.
4. Nathan Lyon
Veteran Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon is the 10th highest wicket-taker this year, but his average of 17.44 is the third-best among the top 10 wicket-takers.
In five Tests, Lyon has snared 25 wickets and was a key bowler in Australia’s series win in New Zealand; he picked up a 10-wicket match haul in Wellington.
3. Gus Atkinson
England fast bowler Gus Atkinson had a dream start to his Test career as he has scalped 34 wickets in 6 Tests at an average of 20.17 with three five-wicket hauls and one ten-wicket match haul. He picked up 12 wickets on his Test debut at Lord’s and continued to dominate the West Indies and Sri Lanka as England won five out of six home Tests. 2. R Ashwin
Senior India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has arguably been the best spinner in the world in Test cricket this year, claiming 37 wickets in 7 Tests at an average of 23. Though Sri Lanka’s Prabath Jayasuriya has taken one more wicket than Ashwin in the same number of Tests, his average of 30 is miles away from Ashwin’s 23.
As usual, Ashwin has dominated the home Test matches as India beat England and Bangladesh. He has three five-fors in these two series, including one at his home ground in Chennai.
1. Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah has been the best fast bowler in the world in Test cricket in 2024, without any doubt. Bumrah has picked up 38 wickets in 7 Tests at a terrific average of 14.42. He has been India’s premier pacer in their wins against South Africa, England, and Bangladesh. He bagged a six-for in Cape Town and Vizag and a four-for in Chennai.
