3 Reasons Why CSK Lost To PBKS IPL 2025: The Punjab Kings defeated the Chennai Super Kings by four runs in Match 22 of the Indian Premier League 2025. The match was played on Tuesday, April 8, at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium (New PCA Stadium) in New Chandigarh (Mullanpur).
This was the Chennai Super Kings’ fourth loss in a row. The five-time champions are having a horrid time in the IPL so far. Now, with four losses and only one win in five games, CSK has only two points and a poor net run rate; this puts them ninth on the points table or second from the bottom.
As for the Punjab Kings, their home ground can finally celebrate. Since starting to play at this new home ground in New Chandigarh last season, this team has only won one out of six games here, including a loss to RR earlier this season. However, with their first win at home in IPL 2025, the Kings now have three wins and six points in four games this season. Couple that with an alright net run rate, and they stand fourth on the league table.
Today, we will look back at three reasons why CSK, the five-time league champions, lost this match at home.
Chennai Super Kings Vs Punjab Kings: 3 Reasons Why CSK Lost To PBKS IPL 2025
3) A Bad Day With The Ball
The Chennai Super Kings had a horrid day with the ball today, with their experienced bowling attack being quite expensive. No bowler for CSK today, except Ravindra Jadeja, who bowled at a sub-10 economy.
Starting with the spinners. This team’s spin department was considered strong ahead of this season. However, so far, not more than one of three bowlers has done well in any of the matches. Today, while Jadeja bowled three overs and only conceded 18 runs, Ravichandran Ashwin conceded 48 runs in four despite taking two wickets. Even Purple Cap holder Noor Ahmad gave away 32 in three overs.
As for the pacers, they too had a foul day today. Khaleel Ahmed took two big wickets but conceded 45 runs in four overs, while Mukesh Choudhary gave away 21 in two. Star pacer Matheesha Pathirana had the worst day of them all, as he conceded 52 runs in four overs and did not take any wickets. This is where the Punjab Kings vs Chennai Super Kings game started tilting towards the hosts.
Despite a solid powerplay, where Ruturaj Gaikwad’s team took three wickets, no top was put on the flow of runs. That was because of –

2) The Priyansh Arya Show
After a few matches in which he failed to show his abilities, Delhi Premier League standout Priyansh Arya showed off his insane slogging skills today. Right from the word go, the Punjab Kings.
From the first ball of the match, which he dispatched for a six, Arya took the attack back to the bowlers. Despite being dropped a few times during his inning, including in the very first over, the 24-year-old kept up the pace of run scoring.
He didn’t even slow down when the string of wickets fell on the other end, including in-form captain Shreyas Iyer. Till the eighth over, five wickets had fallen with no batter other than Priyansh having even scored 10 runs. However, the team score was still 83 at that point, with the Delhi-based opener batting at 57 off 25.
Today, Priyansh Arya scored the joint fourth-fastest 50 in PBKS history in 19 deliveries and went on to score a brilliant century in just 39 deliveries. Not only is this the joint fourth-fastest ton in the history of the IPL, but it is also the second-fastest for the Punjab Kings and the fastest against CSK. His 103 off 42 at the Kings’ inning up to the point that they went well beyond the 200-run mark and changed the complexion of the Punjab Kings vs Chennai Super Kings game. However, all that was only possible because of CSK –
1) Butter Fingers
The Chennai Super Kings is probably the worst fielding side in IPL 205. The fielding standards across the league have not been the highest, but CSK takes that bar quite low. This poor fielding isn’t only restricted to a few trickles here and there but extends to crucial misses and dropped catches.
This season so far, the Super Kings have dropped 12 catches, the most this season. A staggering five dropped catches were registered in this match against the Punjab Kings. In the very first over of the game, after Priyansh Arya hit a six on the very first ball, the young opener was dropped by the bowler himself.
While that might have been a challenging catch, the others weren’t. Even Shashank Singh, who went on to score a fine half-century, was dropped at one point. However, the worst offence wasn’t even a drop. After Arya hit a six on the first ball of the 11th over, on the very next ball, he was caught in the deep by Mukesh Choudhary, but the fielder’s foot hit the boundary rope, and it was given a six.
To better their results and improve their performances in the upcoming games, they need to work on their fielding and catching too.
