3 Reasons SRH Lost To MI IPL 2025: The Mumbai Indians defeated the Sunrisers Hyderabad by four wickets, with 11 balls to spare, in Match 33 of the Indian Premier League 2025. The match was played on Thursday, April 17, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad have not had the best time in IPL 2025 so far. The runners-up from the previous season got off to a horrid start to the competition, losing four matches in a row to LSG, DC, KKR, and GT after winning their opening game against RR. However, they came into this game after defeating the Punjab Kings by chasing down 246 in their last game. After tonight’s loss, SRH now has two wins, four points, and a poor net run rate, putting them ninth on the points table.
As for the Mumbai Indians, they too came into this match with a sub-optimal start to the season. They lost to CSK and GT in their first two games before defeating KKR in their first game at home, after which came successive losses to LSG and RCB. However, the Indians came into this match after beating the Delhi Capitals in their last match. After tonight’s victory, MI now has three wins, six points, and a positive net run rate, putting them seventh on the table.
Today, we will look back at three reasons why SRH, who looked to have found their form in their last game, lost this match.
3 Reasons SRH Lost To MI IPL 2025
3) Not Adapting To The Pitch
As we have seen time and again this season, the Sunrisers Hyderabad failed to adapt to the pitch conditions. It was assumed before the match that the tracks at the Wankhede would be flat and runs would flow like water here. It seems SRH took all the speculation to heart, as they did not look to change their style of batting. A big reason for their poor placement in the league this season has been their inability to adapt.
Openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, while not losing their wickets in the powerplay, could not score too many runs either. On a surface which was a little sticky, the two seemed not to have accounted for that. As a result, not only were they not able to score quick runs, but they also nearly got out in almost every over in the powerplay.
While Abhishek scored 40 off 29, Head managed to score a dismal 28 off 29, at a strike rate of below 100. The rest of the batting attack did not do well either. Speaking of which –
2) Another Top Order Failure
After firing on all cylinders in the last match, the Sunrisers’ top order failed to impress once again in IPL 2025. The team’s best performer with the bat tonight was Abhishek Sharma, who scored 40 runs in 28 deliveries at a strike rate of 142.86. However, he nearly got out several times in the powerplay itself, including on the first ball of the inning. As for the rest of the top four batters, well, let’s talk about it.
Travis Head played arguably his worst inning since joining SRH in 2024, as he scored 28 runs in 29 deliveries at a strike rate of 96.55. He was struggling mightily during all his time on the pitch and scored only three boundaries.
Ishan Kishan, playing against his former franchise, got out after playing three balls and scoring two runs. Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar Reddy scored 19 runs off 21 balls at a strike rate of 90.48. Another ODI-esque inning by a Hyderabad batter in this match.
Heinrich Klassen scored 37 off 28, while Aniket Verma and Pat Cummins slogged in the death to take the Sunrisers Hyderabad to a respectable yet disappointing total of 162 in the Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad match.
1) Will Jacks’ POTM Performance
When the Mumbai Indians bought Will Jacks for Rs. 5.25 Crore in the IPL 2025 mega-auction, team owner Akash Ambani walked down to the RCB table and shook hands with team chairman Prathmesh Mishra for not using an RTM card on the Englishman. However, this season, the overseas all-rounder has not matched the mountainous expectations made of him.
Now, in the match against SRH, Jacks finally showed his presence in this competition. MI spinner Karn Sharma tore some webbing between his fingers on his bowling hand while fielding. This resulted in Will Jacks bowling three overs on the night. But he did not disappoint with his off-spin, bowling an excellent spell of 2/14 at an economy of 4.67, dismissing Travis Head and Ishan Kishan. The 26-year-old all-rounder then scored 36 off 26 and was named the Player of the Match in this Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad game.
An honourable mention goes to the Mumbai Indians’ batting order. While they were chasing down a relatively low total, their top and middle orders did quite well to make this small chase an easy one. None of their top six batters scored below 20 or had a strike rate of below 130.
