3 Reasons PBKS Lost To SRH IPL 2025: The Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated the Punjab Kings by eight wickets, with nine balls to spare, in Match 27 of the Indian Premier League 2025. The match was played on Saturday, April 12, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
The Punjab Kings came into this competition as the better team. In the five games they had played before tonight, they defeated the Gujarat Titans, defeated LSG, lost to RR, and beat CSK. Now, after this loss, they have three wins and six points in five games. Combine that with just about a positive net run rate, and they have plummeted to sixth in the points table.
On the other hand, the Sunrisers were having a horrid time in IPL 0225 so far. They did get off to a fine start, scoring 286 runs against the Rajasthan Royals and beating them by a fine margin. However, since then, they had lost four games in a row against LSG, DC, KKR, and GT. After tonight’s win, they have two wins, four points, and a still-poor net run rate, putting them at eighth on the points table.
Today, we will look back at three reasons why PBKS, who were in such fine form, lost this match.
3 Reasons PBKS Lost To SRH IPL 2025
3) Post-Powerplay Slowdown
While the Punjab Kings did lose this match, they lost it after scoring 245 runs. So it might be a little facetious to suggest that they might have scored less-than-ideal runs. And while that is not the case, there was certainly a distinct slowing of the run rate following the powerplay.
In the first six overs, the Kings scored 89 runs. With that run rate, a score of well over 250 was in sight. However, in the following five overs, only 40 runs were scored, despite one of the overs going for 17 runs. It was Zeeshan Ansari who bowled well to contain the flow of runs in this period, before the slogging resumed with the 12th over worth 20 runs.
With the pace runs that were scored today, it is not difficult to imagine that 10 or even 20 more runs could have been scored in this five-over period, which might just have been the last push of a few runs that would have won Shreyas Iyer’s team the match over Pat Cummins’ side.

2) Lockie Ferguson Getting Injured
Punjab Kings’ pace bowler Lockie Ferguson has been critical for his team in IPL 2025. In the three matches he played before tonight’s match, he took five wickets in three games, taking important wickets at crucial junctures. Ferguson changed his style of bowling a lot this season, using a lot more slower ones and cutters.
The Kiwi fast bowler came in to bowl the fifth inning ball. However, as soon as he bowled the second ball of his first over, he looked in discomfort. During the run-up for the third ball, he had to pull aside. It seemed he had pulled a muscle in his left leg around the thigh region.
This was a major setback for the Chandigarh-based franchise, which was heavily dependent on Lockie Ferguson’s veteran experience to defend a massive but tricky total tonight.
This is the third time the New Zealander has gotten injured since November 2024. Most recently, he pulled his hamstring during ILT20 2025. He has now injured his leg once again in this Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Punjab Kings match.
1) Abhishek Sharma Hulks Out
After having a breakout season in IPL 2024 for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Abhishek Sharma made his India debut, became a regular starter in the Indian T20I setup, and was retained for big money ahead of IPL 2025. So it came as a surprise to many that the 24-year-old looked to be severely out of form at the start of this season.
So far, in 2025, for the SRH, the Punjabi all-rounder had scored only 51 runs in five games at an average of 10.20. He did get a couple of starts this season so far, but he had not scored any big runs. His poor form was, in part, a massive reason for the franchise going out of form, losing four games in a row before this one.
However, Sharma came with only one thought in his mind for tonight’s match: to cause as much destruction as possible. From the word go, the young opening batter took on the experienced PBKS bowlers, scoring boundaries right from the beginning. In the fourth over, he was caught in the deep off a Yash Thakur delivery, but it was called a no-ball. Abhishek did not look back from there.
In one of the best innings in IPL history, Abhishek Sharma went on to score 141 runs in 55 deliveries. Not only was it the largest individual score in SRH history, but also the highest score by an Indian player in the league.
Sharma ended up nearly taking the team to the victory line, which was crossed in the end by Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen in this Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Punjab Kings match.
