3 Reasons LSG Lost To MI IPL 2025: The Mumbai Indians defeated the Lucknow Super Giants by 54 runs while defending 216 in Match 45 of the Indian Premier League 2025. The match was played on Sunday, April 27, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
The Lucknow Super Giants continue their topsy-turvy season with their fifth loss in IPL 2025. With this, they have now won five and lost five games this season. Their wins have come against SRH, MI, KKR, GT, and RR. Meanwhile, they have lost games to DC, PBKS, CSK, the reverse fixture to DC, and this match against MI. With today’s result, they have 10 points and a negative net run rate, which puts them sixth on the points table.
As for the Mumbai Indians, they have caught fire this season like few teams can, but it’s something that MI has done multiple times in seasons before. They kicked off IPL 2025 with losses against CSK and GT. This was followed by their first win, against KKR. They then lost two games on the trot, against LSG and RCB. This was followed by five wins in a row, against DC, SRH, the reverse CSK fixture, another win over SRH, and today’s win over LSG. With this result, they now have six wins, 12 points, and a splendid net run rate, lifting them to second on the league table.
Today, we will look back at three reasons why LSG, who looked like they were in the game for much of the chase, lost this game by a massive margin away from home.
3 Reasons LSG Lost To MI IPL 2025
3) Solid Top Order Batting
The Mumbai Indians’ top order had a successful outing with the bat in this match, with two half-centuries coming from the top four batters. The opening pair of Ryan Rickelton and an in-form Rohit Sharma opened the batting and blitzed past the 30-run mark within three overs before Sharma got out early for 12 off 5.
But there was no reason to worry, as Will Jacks walked in and anchored the inning till the 12th over while Rickelton kept the barrage ongoing. By the time the South African got out for 58 off 32, the team score was 88/2 in the ninth over. This brought Suryakumar Yadav to the crease.
SKY scored a classy 50 in the style only he can, scoring 54 off 28. By the time the top four had been dismissed, MI’s score was 137/4 in the 13th over. This gave a brilliant platform to the likes of Naman Dhir and Corbin Bosch to take the team past the 200-run mark, despite Tilak Varma and captain Hardik Pandya not firing.

2) No Anchor From The Top Order
The Lucknow Super Giants got off to a decent start to what was meant to be a challenging chase. While Aiden Markram did get out early, the pair of Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran took the team to the 60-run mark in the powerplay. It looked like Pooran, after an insane start to the season and cooling down in recent matches, had returned to form once again. But on the first ball of the seventh over, he was dismissed.
This was the story of this chase for the first three-quarters of the inning. A batter would play some decent shots but was unable to convert them into big runs. Especially in the early order, one batter is needed to anchor such a massive chase, but no one emerged as that saviour for LSG today.
Captain Rishabh Pant continued his poor form and got out for four. Marsh scored 34 runs in 24 deliveries before getting out. The middle-order duo of Ayush Badoni and David Miller scored 35 and 24, respectively, but were dismissed right before the final four overs. And then, the course of this Mumbai Indians vs Lucknow Super Giants match was changed by –
1) Bumrah Magic In The Death Overs
They say that having Jasprit Bumrah in your squad is like having a cheat code in real life. That proved to be the notion today, as the ace pacer wreaked havoc on the Super Giants’ batting in the death over. His supporting pace unit of Bosch and Trent Boult played their roles well too.
At the end of the 15th over while chasing a target of 216, LSG was at 140/5. The run rate had slowed down in the past couple of overs, but the game was still hanging in the balance, and then came in Bumrah. He had only conceded 13 runs in his first two overs and had dismissed Aiden Markram. But the 16th over of the second inning was about to change the course of this match.
The over started with a single, bringing David Miller to strike, who was dismissed on the second ball of the over. After a dot on the third, the fourth delivery saw Ravi Bishnoi take a single. Jassi then showed why he is one of, if not the best, bowlers in the world as he bowled Abdul Samad on the fifth ball and then bowled Avesh Khan on the sixth. The over saw Bumrah concede only two runs and take three wickets.
In the remaining four overs, Bumrah conceded seven in his one over, Boult conceded three in the 20th, and Bosch gave away just nine in two overs. This masterclass in death bowling made what was supposed to be a thrilling contest into a massive win for the home side in this Mumbai Indians vs Lucknow Super Giants match.
