The Delhi Capitals defeated the Lucknow Super Giants by eight wickets, with 13 balls to spare, in Match 40 of the Indian Premier League 2025. The match was played on Tuesday, April 22, at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.
The Lucknow Super Giants have now played out nine matches this season and are heading towards the final leg of their league phase. They have registered five wins so far, against SRH, MI, KKR, GT, and RR. They have also lost four matches, twice against DC, including this game, once against PBKS, and another against CSK. With ten points and a negative net run rate, the Super Giants are currently fifth on the points table.
As for the Delhi Capitals, they have won six games this season. They have won two against LSG (including tonight), one against SRH, CSK, RCB, and RR, with the last being in a Super Over. They have also lost two matches this season, against MI and GT. With six wins, two losses, 12 points, and a solid net run rate, the Capitals are currently second on the table.
Today, we will look back at three reasons why LSG, who were playing this match at home, lost this match.
Lucknow Super Giants vs Delhi Capitals: 3 Reasons LSG Lost To DC IPL 2025
3) Pace Bowling Delivers
The DC fast bowlers delivered for their team. It was a fine performance by the pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Mukesh Kumar, and Dushmantha Chameera. The three men not only took all six of the LSG wickets, but they were also quite economical and played a major role in restricting the Super Giants to an underwhelming total.
Starc had a great night out, bowling four overs with a solid spell of 1/25 at an economy of 6.25, dismissing an in-form Nicholas Pooran. The other overseas pacer, Chameera, too, enjoyed his outing, bowling a three-over spell of 1/25 at an economy of 8.33 and dismissing Lucknow’s best batter of the day, Aiden Markram.
However, the day belonged to Mukesh Kumar, who dismissed four of the Super Giants batters, namely Mitchell Marsh, Abdul Samad, Ayush Badoni, and skipper Rishabh Pant. He registered his best IPL figures of 4/33 in four overs at an economy of 8.25 and was named the Player of the Match for his efforts.
2) Middle Order Woes
The Lucknow Super Giants got off to a cruising start to their innings as openers Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh raced past the 50-run mark and went up to 87 in their partnership. Markram even got to his 50 before getting out in the 10th over. Things changed from that point on.
Nicholas Pooran, the Orange Cap holder in IPL 2025, was dismissed for nine, Abdul Samad got out soon after for two, and Marsh, playing on 45, was dismissed in the same over.
By the time LSG was four wickets down at 110, the 14th over had ended. This means that in the last 25 deliveries, only 23 runs were scored and five wickets were lost by the home side. Not only that, but David Miller scored just 14 runs off 15 balls, eating up some precious balls in the final six overs.
While Ayush Badoni did score some quick runs in the death, LSG ended their inning at 159/6 when they should have clearly scored 180 or more to make this Lucknow Super Giants vs Delhi Capitals match competitive. But DC still had to chase this target down. And so they displayed a –
1) A Comprehensive Batting Performance
The Delhi Capitals displayed some fine, no-nonsense batting. With the target being small yet tricky, DC put on a masterclass in chasing. The opening pair of Abhishek Porel and Karun Nair gave the team a flying start, scoring 36 within four overs before Nair was dismissed.
Porel and KL Rahul then put together the best partnership of this entire game. Porel got to his half-century before being dismissed on 51 off 36. The 69-run partnership took Delhi from 36/1 to 105/2 in 11.5 overs before captain Axar Patel walked in.
KL and Axar then took the team home, Rahul scoring a half-century in the process, having scored 57 off 42. But this inning was a lot more important to him than another half-ton. Having scored over 50 runs, the wicketkeeper-batter became the fastest batter to score 5000 runs in the IPL by innings, having done so in his 130th inning tonight.
More importantly, both the Indian Cricket Team players took the Delhi Capitals home in style with more than two overs to spare in a clinical and comprehensive batting performance by the Delhi-based franchise in the Lucknow Super Giants vs Delhi Capitals match.
