The Kolkata Knight Riders have ended IPL 2025 in a disappointing manner. The defending champions kicked the season off with a loss to RCB, then came a win over RR. This ride ended with back-to-back losses to PBKS and GT before KKR’s second match against PBKS was abandoned. Then came two wins in a row against DC and RR. A loss to CSK was next, followed by yet another washed match, this one against RCB. Now, Kolkata has lost its last game of the season to SRH. With five wins, seven losses, two washouts, a negative net run rate, and 12 points in 14 games, the Knight Riders have finished this season at eighth on the points table.
As for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, last year’s finalists opened the season in a fine fashion, with a massive win over RR. But then came this team’s downfall. Four losses in a row against LSG, DC, KKR, and GT. A win over PBKS was followed by two losses to MI. Then came a victory over CSK and a defeat to GT. 1) No Bowler Spared
The Sunrisers Hyderabad looked like the SRH of 2024 with their batting today. This team specialises in making some of the biggest scores in IPL history. And the secret for that to happen is the ability of a team’s batters to spare no opposition bowler. KKR boasts one of the most varied and successful bowling attacks in the league. Despite that, every one of those bowlers went for a lot of runs today.
Let’s start with Kolkata’s hit spin duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy. Narine has not shone too much with the ball this season. While he did take two wickets today, he also conceded 42 runs in four overs at an economy of 10.50. On the other hand, Varun was in the race for the Purple Cap but had his worst outing of the season today, giving away 54 in three overs at 18 rpo and no wickets.
The pace trio of Harshit Rana, Vaibhav Arora, and Anrich Nortje did not do too well either. Rana ended his three-over spell with figures of 0/40 at 13.33 rpo, Nortje conceded 60 in four at an economy of 15 with no wickets, and Vaibhav was the pick of the bunch with the figures of 1/39 in four overs.
Finally, Andre Russell bowled two overs. While the West Indies all-rounder usually plugs the flow of runs and takes a wicket, he gave away 34 runs in two overs at an economy of 17 and took no wickets.

2) A Dull Chase
After conceding the third-highest total in IPL history, the Knight Riders probably knew that they had lost this match even before the batters padded up. However, in such a massive chase, the team batting second still needs to go all out. But that was not the case today. In one of the most boring chases throughout the season, it seemed that KKR had resigned well before the match had ended.
Well, to be fair, KKR got off to a start, albeit slow for the required run rate, at the start of their inning. The opening pair of Sunil Narine and Quinton de Kock scored 32 runs in three overs before Narine was dismissed for 31 off 16. De Kock and captain Ajinkya Rahane then tried keeping up the run rate, but the skipper departed in the sixth over for 15 off eight. At the end of the powerplay, the score was 59/2.
But the slowdown after the end of the first six overs was borderline criminal. Over the next six overs, Kolkata scored only 36 runs and lost three wickets, with de Kock, Rinku Singh, and Andre Russell getting out for single-digit scores, Russell’s wicket being a golden duck.
Angkrish Raghuvanshi lost his wicket soon after, and Ramandeep Singh didn’t score too many runs either. By the 15th over, KKR’s score was 130/7 as Manish Pandey was at the strike with Harshit Rana. The two did bat for some time together, trying to prevent an all-out.
Manish was the highest run scorer for his team, making 37 off 23 before getting out in the 18th over. The rest of the team followed soon, with Harshit being the last wicket in the 19th over after making 34 off 21. 3) The Head-Heinrich Show
While we can discuss how poor KKR’s all-round performance in this season was, the real reason behind such a lopsided result of this match was the uber-attacking batting order for the Sunrisers, who won the toss, decided to bat first, and went beast mode. This match started looking like a typical SRH circa-2024 match when the opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head hit the pedal to the metal from the very start.
The pair made 79 runs in the powerplay without losing any wickets. By the time Sharma was dismissed for 32 off 16 in the seventh over, the team score was 92/1. One would assume after the loss of a wicket, and with the field opening up, the run rate would go down, but the incoming Heinrich Klassen, who was promoted up the batting order, ensured that was not the case.
Head and Heinrich batted together for the next 35 balls, in which they made 83 runs. Travis went down after making an impressive 76 off 40. But despite hitting six 4s and six 6s, the Australian was not the more attacking batter in this partnership. That title went to Klaasen, who reached his half-century in 17 deliveries and then doubled it up in 37 balls, the fastest century in SRH history.
Due to some insane hitting by the South African, the Sunrisers crossed the 200-run mark in the 15th over and went on to make 278. Klassen hit seven 4s and nine 6s in his 39-ball inning and made 105 runs at a strike rate of 269.23.
Contributions towards the massive score were also made by Ishan Kishan (29 off 20) and Aniket Verma (12 off 6). This was the third-highest score in IPL history. All scores in the top four are made by SRH over the last two seasons. With the win in this Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Kolkata Knight Riders match, last year’s finalists finished this otherwise disappointing season with a bang.
