Delhi Capitals, after tonight’s loss, are out of the playoff race in IPL 2025. They had a brilliant start to the tournament before falling off hard. They started the season with four wins in a row, defeating LSG, SRH, CSK, and RFC. They then lost their first game to MI before bouncing back and defeating RR in a Super Over. A loss to GT and a win against LSG were next. DC then lost back-to-back games to RCB and KKR before their match against SRH was abandoned due to rain. In their last two games, Delhi has lost to GT and MI. With six wins, one washout, 13 points, and a slightly negative net run rate in 13 matches, the Capitals are fifth on the points table.

3) A Nightmare At The Death
In this must-win game, the Delhi Capitals got off to a decent start. While over 50 runs were scored in the powerplay, the first seven overs saw MI’s top three depart to the pavilion. The team, on the back of brilliant bowling by Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam, managed to keep the run rate well in check. But then the death overs arrived.
At the 16th over mark, the Mumbai Indians had scored only 116 runs. Tilak Varma had made a run-a-ball 27 and had gotten out an over ago. Suryakumar Yadav had made 25 off 28, and Hardik Pandya had just arrived at the crease. But the game was about to take a wild turn from this point.
In the final four overs, Mumbai made 62 runs. But not in the way one would imagine. The 17th over went for eight runs, and the 18th over went for six. MI was headed towards a par score before the whole complexion of the game changed in the 19th over. Bowled by Mukesh Kumar, who had bowled well to this point, the penultimate over of the inning went for 27 runs, with SKY and Naman Dhir hitting three 6s and two 4s.
Then, in the 20th over, bowled by Dushmantha Chameera, a 21-run swerve was made as Yadav hit two 4s and two 6s. With 48 runs in the last two overs, the Indians reached a solid score of 180/5. Due to their last overs, Mukesh and Chameera saw their figures for the day get ruined. While Yadav had bowled a four-over spell for 2/48, Dushmantha’s figures after four overs read 1/54.

Suryakumar Yadav’s consistency in IPL 2025 has been phenomenal. He has crossed the 25-run mark in every game this season. And tonight, he gave a Player of the Match performance with his 73 off 43, taking his team to a respectable total and winning them this crucial match.
Surya came in to bat in the sixth over at 48/2, with Rohit Sharma and Will Jacks in the pavilion. In the very next over, Ryan Rickelton was dismissed. After losing their top order, Yadav and Tilak Varma did stabilise the innings, but reduced the run rate to a screeching halt. When Varma got out for 27 off 27, in came captain Hardik Pandya at 113/4 in the 15th over.
When Pandya got out in the 17th over, SKY was at 40 off 30. But things were about to change, and the captain of the Indian T20I side was about to change gears. With only two overs remaining in the inning, Surya was at 45 off 35. He then hit a six off the first ball of the 19th to reach his half-century before taking a single off the next ball.

1) Delhi’s Batting Collapse
While a score of 180 seems quite chasable in the modern landscape of IPL cricket, this chase was not going to be smooth sailing. The first inning had shown us that spinners could weave webs and bring the run rate down in the crucial middle overs. But despite a rough end to their bowling, DC would be liking their chances in this must-win match at the halfway mark.
Delhi’s top order almost immediately disappointed them. The opening pair of KL Rahul and Faf du Plessis did not add too many runs together. Faf was dismissed in the second over after scoring just six runs, falling victim to Deepak Chahar’s bowling. Rahul got out in the very next over after scoring 11 by Trent Boult. And to round off the powerplay of despair, Abhishek Porel scored just six runs in nine deliveries before getting out in the fifth over.
At the end of six overs, the Capitals’ score was 49/3. At No. 4 and 5, instead of Tristan Stubbs, DC sent Sameer Rizvi and Vipraj Nigam. Nigam scored some quick runs but was dismissed in the eighth for 20 off 11. As the spin duo of Mitchell Santner and Karn Sharma and ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah were introduced in the middle overs, Delhi’s run rate fell to the floor.
Tristan Stubbs came and went quickly, Rizvi scored a slow 39 off 35, and Ashutosh Sharma made 18 runs in 16 balls before getting out in the 15th over. At this point, the match had all but ended.
