3 Concerns For CSK After Consecutive Losses: The Chennai Super Kings started their title defense in IPL 2024 with a couple of hefty wins—by 6 wickets against RCB and by 63 runs against Gujarat Titans—both at Chepauk in Chennai, their home ground. After leaving Chepauk, CSK suffered a couple of blips.
After being on top of the points table early on, CSK, led by new skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, have lost some ground with two consecutive losses—by 20 runs against Delhi Capitals and by 6 wickets against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
3 Concerns For CSK After Consecutive Losses:
Slow starts from Ruturaj Gaikwad
Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad might want to reassess his batting in the tournament so far as he’s been guilty of slow starts. Now that Rachin Ravindra is being the aggressor, Gaikwad, also saddled with the responsibility of captaining the side, has been slow to get off the blocks. Last season, Gaikwad used to be the aggressor, while Devon Conway was the anchor.
However, the issue this season has been that Gaikwad hasn’t been able to translate his conservative starts into a big score. In 4 innings, he has 88 runs at a strike rate of only 118. His last knock, 26 runs in 21 balls against SRH, was the perfect example of how a conservative start could hurt a batsman’s own team on a good pitch.
Rahane is not looking like the Rahane of last season
Senior batsman Ajinkya Rahane had an absolute blast last season, when he batted with unbelievable freedom and took down the pacers. Last season, Rahane had a strike rate of 172. However, this year, teams have come better prepared for him and have tried to bowl more spin to Rahane than last year. This has meant he’s been tied to a strike rate of 130 so far.
CSK’s Indian pacers need to pull up their socks
While Pathirana and Mustafizur have been impressive so far, CSK’s Indian pacers, Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, and Mukesh Choudhary, have leaked heavily. Chahar has an economy of 9.16 and Deshpande of 8, and the two have only picked up six wickets between them in four games; Choudhary was smoked for 27 runs in the only over he bowled against SRH.
